What We Learned Pouring Protein Coffee at Studio React

We introduced two protein coffee flavors at a busy Porto cycling and Pilates studio. The unflavored whey preserved the original coffee flavor perfectly.

What We Learned Pouring Protein Coffee at Studio React

*Disclosure: Mindful Crumb partnered with Studio React in Porto for this product demonstration event. Studio React provided the venue and access to their community. All observations and conclusions in this article reflect Mindful Crumb's independent experience.*

In November 2025, we brought protein coffee to Studio React, a busy cycling and Pilates studio in Porto, Portugal. The concept was simple: demonstrate that adding protein to your morning coffee does not require a blender, special equipment, or any compromise on taste. What we learned went far beyond the coffee itself.

I have been training for over twenty years, and one of the biggest obstacles I see with protein supplementation is not knowledge -- it is friction. People know they need more protein. They buy the powder. And then the tub sits on the shelf because making a shake feels like one more task in an already overpacked morning. The protein coffee approach eliminates that friction entirely by embedding protein into something people already do every single day.

The Setup

Studio React is not a traditional gym. It is a cycling and Pilates studio that attracts a community-oriented clientele -- people who value movement as a lifestyle rather than a chore. The members range from competitive cyclists to Pilates practitioners looking for strength and mobility work. It was the ideal environment to test whether protein coffee could integrate naturally into a post-class social ritual.

We set up a simple tasting station and prepared two flavor profiles built on Mindful Crumb's unflavored Primal Core grass-fed whey protein.

The Two Flavors Tested

Caramel Cappuccino -- We combined Primal Core whey with oat milk, a shot of espresso, and a small amount of natural caramel flavoring. The result was creamy, warm, and subtly sweet. Multiple participants compared it to premium cafe beverages and genuinely could not believe it contained protein. One cyclist said, "If this was on the menu at a coffee shop, I would order it every day."

Cinnamon Cream -- Primal Core whey blended with warm milk, a dusting of Ceylon cinnamon, and a hint of vanilla. This was the comfort option: soft, warm, and grounding. It was particularly popular with the Pilates participants, many of whom described it as the perfect post-session ritual. Several people asked for the exact recipe to recreate at home.

The Three-Step Method

One of the most important things we demonstrated was the mixing technique. Protein coffee fails when people dump cold powder into hot coffee and end up with clumps floating on top. The method we used is foolproof:

  • Dissolve first. Add one scoop (30g) of Primal Core whey to a small amount of warm (not boiling) water or milk -- approximately 50ml. Stir or shake until completely smooth.
  • Combine. Pour the dissolved protein mixture into your prepared coffee.
  • Stir and enjoy. A quick stir integrates everything. No blender needed. No clumps. No foam.

The warm water step is critical. It pre-dissolves the protein so it integrates seamlessly with the coffee rather than coagulating from the heat. Every single participant at Studio React was able to do this on their first attempt.

What Participants Actually Said

The feedback was consistent and, frankly, surprising in its intensity. The two most common reactions were:

  • "This does not taste like protein at all."
  • "How is this so smooth?"

People expected the chalky, artificially sweet experience they associate with protein shakes. What they got was a latte-like beverage with added body and creaminess, zero artificial aftertaste, and no clumps. Several participants who identified as "non-protein-powder people" said this was the first format they could see themselves using consistently.

The unflavored protein was the key. Because Primal Core has no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or additives, it does not fight the coffee. It complements it. The protein adds richness and texture -- similar to upgrading from skim milk to whole milk in a latte -- without introducing any competing flavor.

The Deeper Insight: Habit Stacking Works

The most significant takeaway from Studio React was not about taste. It was about behavior.

In the fitness and nutrition industry, we spend enormous energy trying to get people to add new habits: drink a shake, prepare a meal, take a supplement. The compliance rate on new habits is notoriously low. Research on behavior change consistently shows that the most sustainable approach is not adding new habits but modifying existing ones.

This is exactly what protein coffee does. It does not ask anyone to change their morning. It asks them to add 30 grams of protein to something they are already doing. The coffee ritual is deeply ingrained -- often the most consistent behavior in a person's entire day. By layering protein onto that ritual, the barrier to consistency drops to nearly zero.

At Studio React, we watched this principle play out in real time. Members who had purchased protein powder months ago and barely used it immediately saw how protein coffee could fit into their existing routine without any additional time, effort, or thought. Several told us they started making protein coffee the very next morning.

Nutritional Impact

A single protein coffee made with one scoop of Primal Core whey delivers approximately 22 grams of grass-fed protein. For many people, this simple addition is enough to transform their breakfast from a protein desert (under 10 grams from coffee and toast) into a protein-adequate meal.

Over the course of a week, that is an additional 154 grams of protein with zero extra preparation time. Over a month, over 600 grams. Over a year, the cumulative impact on muscle preservation, satiety, and body composition is substantial -- and it all comes from a 30-second modification to something you were going to do anyway.

How to Make It at Home

The recipes we served at Studio React are easy to replicate:

Basic Protein Coffee:

  • 1 scoop Primal Core whey (30g)
  • 50ml warm water or milk
  • 1 shot espresso or 200ml brewed coffee
  • Dissolve protein in warm liquid first, then add coffee. Stir.

Caramel Cappuccino Version:

  • Follow the basic method using oat milk instead of water
  • Add a small drizzle of natural caramel or a pinch of coconut sugar
  • Top with a dusting of cinnamon

Cinnamon Cream Version:

  • Follow the basic method using warm milk
  • Add half a teaspoon of Ceylon cinnamon and a splash of vanilla extract
  • Stir well. Enjoy warm.

Final Thoughts

The Studio React event confirmed something I have believed for a long time: the best supplement strategy is the one people actually use. Protein coffee is not the most glamorous approach to supplementation. It does not come with fancy branding or complex protocols. But it works because it removes the single biggest barrier to consistency: the effort of creating a new habit.

If you drink coffee every morning, you are already 90% of the way to a protein-rich start to your day. The remaining 10% is one scoop, one stir, and thirty seconds.
